Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
