Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

International Reactions

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
