Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.

At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
